About Us

Launched in 2010 by The Young Centre for the Performing Arts, City Choir has since grown into an exciting independent choral group. Our five well-known original directors have stayed with us – Waleed Abdulhamid, John Millard, Patricia O’Callaghan, Greg Oh, and Suba Sankaran.

Open to all who love to sing, City Choir is a Toronto-based, non-auditioned community choir. We perform music of many different styles (jazz, pop, classical, folk, world, funk, spirituals, holiday songs and more). Listen to examples of what we have rehearsed.

In addition to our self-produced concerts, City Choir performs throughout Toronto at various cultural events and cultural spaces. See examples of rehearsals and performances we have given in the past.

We have performed as part of The Events, a successful early 2020 Crow’s Theatre theatre production, at The Drake Underground, the Aga Khan Museum and Ismaili Centre, in Luminato in 2019, and also in 2015 as part of the Mixed Choir in R. Murray Shaffer’s Apocalypsis, several times in SING A Cappella Festival, at the Young Centre for the Performing Arts in the Global Cabaret and Winter Waves Festival, at the Evergreen Brickworks, and the Distillery District Christmas Market. Two exciting projects have been put partially on hold, pending the pandemic. See our News for glimpses into past and future events.

The choir is looking forward to singing together for the foreseeable future so we are always welcoming new members!
